Simply Amazing!

Let me start by saying this:
DESMOND. IS. AMAZING.

Desmond is Amazing Drag Slayer

The pre-teen drag queen, who goes by Desmond Is Amazing (which isn’t at all a brag, but rather a completely factual statement) isn’t even in high school yet, but he is already changing the world for the better and making it a lot more fabulous. Since he was first discovered at Pride in New York City a few years back, Desmond Is Amazing has been everywhere, and before he can even drive a car he already has a career that would make some seasoned queens jealous.

The petite performer is an inspiration to queens everywhere, as his looks are on-point and he knows how to carry himself in an interview and on the runway, and he’s a role model for young people all around the world, as he’s showing them that they can be whoever and whatever they want. Desmond Is Amazing is truly one of a kind, and he’s...well...amazing.

I spoke with Desmond Is Amazing recently, and he’s just as fierce and fabulous as I knew he would be.

How do you manage going to school, being a kid, and going to all these drag events at the same time?

Right now it is summer vacation, so I get to go to the playground and park a lot. When I was in school, my mom would schedule my photoshoots, interviews and events after school, so it was like my after school activities. Some kids play football or dance after school, but I do drag. It's what I like to do. Sometimes I would have to be out of school for an event, but I would get my school ork beforehand or I would make it up later.

Where do all of your incredible outfits come from?

I design my outfits. I sketch them out in my fashion template books. Then my mom makes them and I help when I can. We also go to the LGBTQ thrift store, Out of the Closet, and get all kinds of things that we mix and match into fabulous outfits. Or sometimes we rework the items we get from the thrift store. I'm very big on sustainable fashion ever since watching "The True Cost" so I try not to buy new stuff for my outfits.

What inspires you when it comes to clothing or makeup?

I am inspired by the style of the 1990s and the club kids. I like the fashion and the makeup, not the bad stuff that happened. I also am inspired by a lot of fashion designers like Alexander McQueen, Malan Breton, Moschino, Patricia Field, Comme Des Garcons, John Galliano, Anna Sui, Betsey Johnson, and Jean Paul Gaultier. I love things that are avant garde or artistic. I guess you could call me a fashion queen.

How has your life changed over the past several years since people have started following your drag?

Well, my life has gotten busy and I have done so many things like being in Vogue, walking in NYFW, being on a billboard in Times Square, and cutting the ribbon with RuPaul at DragCon NYC last year. But I am really happy to do all of that because I am reaching a lot of young people. I want people to know that it is okay to be themselves.

What would you like to do with your drag in the future?

I want to keep doing artistic drag. I would love to be on Dragula or RuPaul's Drag Race one day.

What advice would you have for kids your age who are interested in drag?

You should be yourself always no matter what anybody says and pay the haters no mind because they will never be as fierce as you are. Anyone can do drag no matter their gender, race, age, identity, orientation, or abilities.
